Patrick A. Roth, M.D. is a board-certified neurosurgeon who has been practicing
neurosurgery in Bergen County, New Jersey since 1994. He is a founding member of
North Jersey Brain & Spine Center. His extensive undergraduate work in physics and
philosophy, has led him into the sub-specialty of spinal surgery with its need to combine
an understanding of physical mechanics and psychology.
Dr. Roth earned his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine where he graduated as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society in 1987. He did his residency in Boston with a Tuft’s and Harvard affiliated hospital program and graduated as chief resident in 1994. His publications include textbook chapters on cancer in neurosurgery, techniques in spine surgery, hydrocephalus, and Chiari malformations. Currently, Dr. Roth is Vice-Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at Hackensack University Medical Center. In addition, his interest in training residents has led to his appointment as Site Director for the neurosurgical residency program at Hackensack University Medical Center, in conjunction with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Dr. Roth is dedicated to the improvement in the treatment of spinal disorders utilizing minimally invasive techniques in the operating room. He was among one of the first surgeons in the area to employ computer assisted surgery, robotic surgery on the spine, percutaneous fusions of the spine and same day treatment of cervical and lumbar disc surgery. As an alternative to surgery, he offers aggressive physical therapy and a transition to a home based core strengthening program. Over the past several years, he has concentrated mostly on spine related disorders. He treats a vast array of spinal problems from simple laminectomies to complex reconstructive spine surgeries. He has most recently been interested in doing percutaneous fusions using a microscope for visualization, magnification and illumination. He is energized by diagnostic challenges and prides himself on treating every patient as a unique individual. He believes in educating his patients fully so that they can make informed decisions and be active participants in their own care. He is currently in the process of writing a book focused on the contradictions within the current concepts of back care and how to choose the correct healthcare provider. The book will also include a practical approach to a home exercise program using kettle bells and an overview of the latest minimally invasive techniques. Over the last several years he has also been named to the “Top Doctors” list in the New York Metro Area by Castle Connolly and “Top Surgeons” by Consumers’ Research Council of America. Outside interests include competing in triathlons, tennis, and exercising. Hospital Affiliations
