Botulinum Toxin Injections

Botulinum toxin injection is an effective treatment for a variety of movement disorders including myoclonus, hemifacial spasm, spasticity, tremor, blepharospasm, cervical dystonia, spasmodic torticollis and dystonia of the leg and foot. Excessive salvation or drooling resulting from a variety of neurological conditions may also respond to treatment. Benefit is typically realized in 3-10 days after injection with a lasting response measured in months. The treatment involves the injection of a small dose of Clostridium botulinum-a potent neurotoxin-directly into the muscle responsible for the abnormal movements and spasms. The deformity and pain associated with muscular contraction normally respond within 3-10 days with benefit persisting for months. Injections are performed in an office setting and discomfort, if any, is temporary and minor.
